You Get What You Need: A Haiku on Dad Wisdom

A haiku on dad wisdom and the slow gift of getting what you need — three lines that take years to understand, and a lifetime to appreciate.

My dad said this to me at some point and I didn’t understand it for a long time. I do now.

My dad once told me

You do not get what you want

You get what you need

The thing you wanted was usually for the person you used to be. The thing you got was for the person you were going to become. It feels unfair until it doesn’t, and then it feels like a gift.
